These three acronyms get thrown around constantly. Here's the simple version.
AHAs (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) work on the surface of the skin, loosening dead cells and revealing brighter skin underneath. Lactic acid, the gentlest AHA, is particularly valuable because it does more than exfoliate. Clinical research shows that lactic acid at 5% stimulates ceramide production, increasing ceramide levels in the outer skin layer by 48%. Ceramides are the lipids that hold your skin barrier together, which means lactic acid is one of the rare exfoliants that simultaneously renews and strengthens your skin.
BHAs (Beta Hydroxy Acids) are oil-soluble, which means they can penetrate into the pore rather than staying on the surface. Salicylic acid is the primary BHA in skincare. At low concentrations like 0.5%, it targets congestion and uneven texture inside the pore reaching areas that surface exfoliants simply can't.
PHAs (Polyhydroxy Acids) are the newest generation and arguably the most underrated. Because of their larger molecular size, PHAs penetrate slowly and exfoliate at the very surface making them significantly gentler than AHAs or BHAs. What makes them remarkable is that they act as humectants at the same time, drawing moisture into the skin while they exfoliate. Research published in PubMed Central found that lactobionic acid one of the most effective PHAs improved skin barrier function more than any other hydroxy acid tested, with significantly less transepidermal water loss than glycolic or lactic acid-treated skin. A PHA exfoliates and protects the barrier simultaneously. That's rare.
Why Minimal Skincare Wins
Most skincare brands are built around selling you more. The real cost isn't just money, it's your barrier. Stacking multiple actives, over-exfoliating, or layering products in the wrong order strips the ceramides and natural oils your skin needs to protect itself. After the acids do their work, Niacinamide and Centella Asiatica step in to rebuild. Niacinamide supports ceramide synthesis. Centella Asiatica has clinical evidence for barrier repair across multiple peer-reviewed dermatology studies. Aloe Vera, Hyaluronic Acid, and Glycerin lock moisture in. These aren't decorative ingredients they're the reason the toner exfoliates at night and leaves skin calm and hydrated in the morning.
